Mickey Leland International Terminal Expansion
As part of the $1.458 billion George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP), the expansion of the Mickey Leland International Terminal combines new construction with extensive renovations, making it the largest capital improvement project in Houston Airports’ history. This modernization effort will establish one of the most advanced international terminals in the U.S., addressing current and future roadway and curbside capacity needs, enhancing baggage handling capacity and reliability, and improving the overall experience for international travelers.
Key components of the ITRP include:
- Terminal D refresh
- Relocation of ticketing and departure curb facilities to the International Central Processor (ICP)
- Expansion of Terminal D with the new D-West Pier
- New Terminal D Baggage Handling System (BHS)
- New Terminal D Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) Building
The opening of the D-West Pier marks a major milestone, introducing six new gates (D1-D6) designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft or up to 10 narrow-body airplanes. This expansion not only meets increasing passenger and airline demand but also enhances the travel experience, reinforcing Bush Airport’s role as a premier global aviation hub. The D-West Pier offers a range of amenities, including adult changing facilities, hydration stations, an interactive kiosk, a mother’s room, a sensory room, a customer service area, a child’s play area, and a space for Harmony in the Air musical performances. This 160,000-sf addition brings Terminal D to nearly 500,000-sf, featuring a striking 10,000-sf architectural ceiling and eight new art installations.
